Lemon Water: An Ancient African Tradition

There are so many different ways you can lead a healthier life if only by changing one thing for the better you've made a step in the right direction. Some people advise cutting out meat, while others promote eating more meat through low-carb and Paleo diets. One thing remains true for every new diet or lifestyle change: you need to drink more water, you are not going to find someone who argues with this fact. While it is good to have as much water as you can (within reason) throughout the day, another thing to keep in mind is adding fruit to your water, like lemons.

First things first. . . 

Lemons are native to Asia- China, India, and Myanmar locations to be exact however the first recorded use of lemons as a beverage date back to Ancient Egypt.

Since 1550 B.C.,Egypt lemon water has been used for healing. Lemon water is an excellent source of vitamins and minerals for you, it tastes delicious, and can help you lose weight. If you are not trying to lose weight, it is still beneficial in many ways you might not have considered;

The first thing you should know about lemon water is that it is loaded with nutrients, including many vitamins and minerals. One of the primary vitamins is vitamin C, including over 100% of your daily amount in just one cup of lemon juice. However, vitamin C isn’t the only nutrient you should be aware of.

Lemon water is extremely low in fat and calories, even with a small amount of sugar. It has copious amounts of potassium, copper, and magnesium, along with some fiber, thiamin, vitamin B6, and vitamin E. These are all nutrients from the lemons themselves, so the more concentrated your lemon water is, the more vitamins and minerals you will be consuming each day.

If you have been having difficulties with your digestive system, then lemon water is the perfect addition due to the fiber present in lemon juice. Drinking lemon water regularly will really help to get things moving and decrease abdominal cramps, and constipation. When you add lemons to your water, you are mimicking the digestive juices inside your stomach via the lemon juice, if you're suffering from nausea try a lemon tea with ginger and honey to ease your symptoms. 

You Can Boost Your Immune System. . .

Lemon water is also ideal for giving your immune system a nice boost. The  minerals such as copper, magnesium and potassium that work with the vitamins E and C create an acidic nutrient packed liquid that prevents bacteria from surviving and helps balance your PH levels.

Lemon Water Gives You Fresh Breath. . .

Believe it or not, just drinking a glass of warm lemon water in the morning can give your mouth a refreshing feeling and others will notice it too. Lemons are great for getting rid of bad breath and can even help to relieve your toothaches. However, be careful and don’t brush your teeth directly before or after drinking it. The citric acid has the potential to wear away at your tooth enamel.

The vitamin C & B6 in lemon water isn’t just good for your immune system; it can also give you healthy, clear, glowing skin. Vitamin B6 helps to balance your hormones and if you're someone who suffers from hormonal acne you should be drinking at least 1 glass of lemon water a day. The vitamin C can also boost the natural collagen production in your skin, making you look more youthful.

It Makes it Easier to Lose Weight. . .

While just drinking lemon water on its own won’t necessarily help you lose weight without other changes, it can boost your weight loss efforts when combined with other diet and exercise changes. Add in lemon water to your morning routine to increase your energy throughout the day; lemon water can also increase your metabolic rate, which helps you burn fat much faster.
